Fail Shoe Burning Attempt.

Post by Scuffy-mhh »

I tried to create a shoe melting and burning video the other day. I'll post up the video when I'm able too. It did NOT went well at all. I must be doing something wrong. Please give me some advice.

I lit up a barbeque grill in the patio. Now, when the manufacture say "used in a will vented area", they really mean well vented. I though the patio was well vented, apparently not enough. There was way too much smoke. What is worse, the wind keeps blowing the smoke back into the patio. On top of that, the smoke would not rise, but rather stay low close to the ground. :!:

First the charcoal was producing too much smoke. I figure the charcoals were probable not hot enough. So I carefully added more butane lighter fluid. Apparently a little too much, since the barbeque grill was a bow of fire. Finally the fire dies down and the charcoals started smoke less.

Then I place a cooking sheet over the grill. I place a dress shoe on the cooking sheet. She is a 1 inch low heel mule. Will, the bottom outer sole melted well, forming into a puddle of plastic cookie. Problem is, the shoe was giving off way too much smoke. And it smells like an electrical fire. Electrical fire smell like burnt shrimp head.

So I figure maybe the shoe is not hot enough. Maybe I needed to place her in direct fire. How stupid of me! :!: :o

Will, I remove the cooking sheet and place the shoe on top of the hot coals. Will the shoe started to melt and quickly caught fire. This process also produce lots and lots of smoke. Way too much smoke. So much smoke that my eyes and lungs started to hurt. Fortunately, the smoke were mostly white smoke. I ran into the house, catch a breath of fresh air, then ran out and slam the lid of the barbeque grill closed and shut the vents. I figure this would smother out the fire. All it did was started to produce gray smoke now. And even more smoke. :x

I roll out a sheet of foil. It was a good thing I use foils. It made clan up a lot cleaner.

So I held my breath. Open the lid of the barbeque grill. The barbeque grill fire flare right up again with a huge puff of gray smoke. With some thongs, I grab the shoe, place her on the foil sheet, and roll up the sheet to put out the shoe on fire out. Then I close the barbeque grill lid again. I then went back into the house. After about 2 hours, the fire in the barbeque grill stops smoking and went out.

I smell like barbeque and electrical fire. Strangely, my urine also smell like electrical fire. Maybe I must of absorb some of the smoke through my skin.

The burnt shoe became some sort of hard, crystallize carbon. Strange. Maybe if I put some pressure and more heat, I might get a diamond shoe. :P

Anyway, many of you burn shoes. What are you doing right that I'm doing wrong. Help please. I have over a 100 pair of shoes that I want to make more free melting shoe video for you people.

I did enjoy your message, Thanks for posting.

A diamond shoe.....is that like a uptown glass slipper.

My BBQ is gas. I have done fish. I do not think I want to do shoes in a BBQ that I am going to cook on next day. Junker BBQ or crab cooker with an old cookie sheet might do.

Surprised you didn't burn the camera, LOL@! :D

But in all earnest, this would be a great tip too. Lots of folks forget it but many people don't have steady hands. So it would be useful to buy a tripodfor you cam. You'll get a great steady shot and you've got both hands free to play scene of burning shoes.

An example:

To reduce the smoke, the fire must be able to breath. When combustion takes place with little oxygen, more smoke is produced. Let's take your grill for example. Make sure there are holes in the bottom of it sufficient enough to allow a good intake of air. Also, if you are using charcoal, make sure the coals have ashed over and glowing red. There will be some smoke, but as the flames increase, the smoke should die down. That is how I grilled the clogs.

Absolutely, like DanskoJoe said, you must wait for the coals to ash over and glow red. Hubby and I use an old grill that we dedicated to my shoe-bq parties. Once you burn shoes on a grill like we do, you can never cook food on it again, besides, it gave us a good reason to go buy a NICE grill for food. I can't say I have ever tried to melt a shoe, I think that would cause a lot of smoke as the shoe actually starts to smolder with a fire, which produces smoke. Also when I grill a shoe, I don't use the upper grill part, I place them right into the now glowing coals using tongs. Afetr a few minutes, I remove them and take a few shots of the charring and other nice effects the hot coals left behind. Then I put them in the fire again. It might also be the fuel you are using. We use plain old bbq lighter fluid. But once the coals are ashed over they are ready for anything. Shoes in general do smoke a lot too. That is why we have the grill on the driveway and park the cars around to block direct exposure to the street side, privacy is utmost for us. Hope this helps....you do have to have a good ventilation both below and above the grill for airflow.

Thanks for your input guys.

My main problem is, there is way too much smoke. It might be like what Badgirl said, shoes in general produces too much smoke.

Anyway, back to the drawing board. :(
